This all prepared me to become an “intercessor” later in my journey when I found myself spending hours praying for the needs of others. All the little memorized prayers of the past took on less importance, as I truly began to talk with God like I would talk with a close friend. This was the beginning of a closer intimacy with God. If you want to get to know someone, you have to spend time with the person. To build any kind of a relationship, you must talk and communicate with the other person. The same is true with God. If you really want to know Him, you must spend quality time with Him! This was learning how to “be still, and know that He is God” time. Often He would speak back to me through His written Word, the Bible, to answer my questions or bring me comfort and stretch my faith.

As weeks went by, I began to praise God during my prayer time, telling Him, or singing to Him, how wonderful He was to me, which I had never done before during all my church years. Psalm 22:3 in the King James Version was highlighted to me, “Thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” I learned from this verse that God inhabits our praise. When I was praising Him, God drew near to me. This was all preparing me to become a worshipper. As you spend quality time loving God, letting Him know how much He means to you, that is worship, whether it’s accompanied by music or not. I began to spend hours singing to Him with the help of Christian music cassette tapes, which helped say things that were deep in my heart, to help me reverence, honor, and adore Him. Later I came across verses that say we are to “worship God in the beauty of holiness.”1 This realization opened my understanding that God sees a holy lifestyle as worship as well, and could better understand why He had been working on changing my heart and my ways that weren’t like His, through this time of seemingly never-ending suffering.

WORDS CAME TUMBLING OUT

One day as I sat praising and thanking Him, words began to tumble out of my mouth unexpectedly. These words sounded Italian, and although I didn’t know exactly what I was saying to God, I somehow knew they were directed to Him, and that it was part of the process of praising Him. My husband and I had Italian friends, so I decided to ask one of them to listen to the words that I had spoken during my prayer time, and tell me if they were really Italian. The words were ingrained into my heart and my mind, and I was able to easily say them back to him. After listening, our friend, Greg, looked surprised and said that the words were actually Italian words. He said I was asking someone in a serious way “to come…to come here
